EVENING BOOKCLUB

We will be reading “Baker Towers: A Novel” by Jennifer Haigh.

bakertower

Bakerton is a company town built on coal, a town of church festivals and ethnic neighborhoods,
hunters’ breakfasts and firemen’s parades. Its children are raised in company houses— three rooms upstairs, three rooms downstairs. The mines were not named for Bakerton; Bakerton was named for the mines. This is an important distinction. It explains the order of things. The book follows the Novak family in this Pennsylvania mining town, from the 1940’s through the 60’s, vividly portraying the changing role of women during and after World War II. You won’t forget them; they’ll linger in your mind like old friends.

LUNCHEON GROUPS

Would you like to join a Lunch Group?

The BBNC has several Lunch Groups that meet monthly.  Usually, a lunch group consists of 8 – 12 people who take turns hosting and cooking for the group. The host is the primary cook but has at least one member to assist. It is an excellent way to really get to know other members of the BBNC. The group is limited to 12 because it is difficult to host and cook for more than that. A new group can be formed if you are interested.

This bestselling novel is about a missionary family, the Prices, who in 1959 move from Georgia to the fictional village of Kilanga in the Belgian Congo. The Price’s story, which parallels their host country’s tumultuous emergence into the post-colonial era, is narrated by the five women of the family: Orleanna, long-suffering wife of Baptist missionary Nathan Price, and their four daughters – Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May.

We will be reading “The Historian”, by Elizabeth Kostova.

historian

What does the legend of Dracula have to do with the modern world? Is it possible that the Dracula of myth truly existed — and that he has lived on, century after century, pursuing his own unknowable ends?  Generations of historians have risked their reputations, their sanity, and even their lives to learn the truth about Dracula. Now one young woman must decide whether to take up this quest herself — to follow her father in a hunt that nearly brought him to ruin years ago.  This fascinating novel takes you across borders and centuries, from dusty Ivy League libraries to Istanbul, Budapest, and the shadowy depths of Eastern Europe.

We will be reading “The World Without Us” by Alan Weisman.

world

In this far-reaching narrative, Weisman explains how our massive infrastructure would collapse and finally vanish without human presence; which everyday items may become immortalized as fossils; why some of our earliest buildings might be the last architecture left; and how plastic, bronze sculpture, radio waves, and some man-made molecules may be our most lasting gifts to the universe. He reveals how, just days after humans disappear, floods in New York's subways would start eroding the city's foundations, and how, as the world's cities crumble, asphalt jungles would give way to real ones, birds would flourish, and cockroaches would perish.

“I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974.”

So begins Jeffrey Eugenides’ second novel, Middlesex, the story of Calliope Stephanides, who discovers at the age of fourteen that she is really a he. Cal traces the story of his transformation and the genetic condition that caused it back to his paternal grandparents, who happen also to be brother and sister, and the Greek village of Bithynios in Asia Minor.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION

English Conversation wants to enable everyone to communicate with each other.

If you are a native English speaker or even if you just started to learn the language, it will be great to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea  in a relaxing and friendly environment.  We will talk about the experiences we made and we will learn something about the different cultures. Don't be afraid; join us for a great time.

Please note that we will be meeting on the first Friday this month, due to the holidays. Our October canned food drive was a huge success. A very special thank you to our volunteer drivers who delivered the cans to Gleaners!

We will be having a gift exchange this month. If you would like to participate in the exchange, please bring a wrapped gift that costs between $10.00 and $15.00 dollars

MOMS & TOTS

If you are new in the area with little children at home, this is  the friendly supportive group you need!

We offer an opportunity to meet new people. Enjoy a girl’s night out and/or couples’ night out.

Once a month, we arrange an outing, either a museum, indoor play area or other suggested fun meeting place.
